More Sports Gripes for Thursday: Favre, the Lakers, and the Geico Lizard

In keeping with the Curmudgeonly Professor's quest to be more curmudgeonly, here are today's sports gripes:

• Message to Bret Favre:  We all loved you in the day, but follow Kenny Rogers' advice and "Know when to fold'em."  Enough is enough.  You are not immortal.
• Irritation Numbers 2-5:  The Los Angeles Lakers.  As Kobe Bryant said in the morning paper, more or less, "this is the playoffs and it's going to be physical."  Like a throat hit on Artest that got Artest so riled he got tossed while you enjoyed it all.  Artest has been a pretty good boy up till now.  So enjoy game 3.
• But here's a non-sports gripe:  The Geico lizard.  Enough already, send this green lizard to the lizard after world.

Sports Irritations of the Curmudgeonly Professor for May 6

The Curmudgeonly Professor has been accused of being a phony, of not being curmudgeonly enough, since all he does is post photos of flowers and such.  To remedy this situation, he hereby provides a list of the items about which he is irritated today:

• The Los Angeles Lakers.  Forever and ever.  Despite my granddaughter.
• The Denver Nuggets.  We used to love Denver when we lived in Colorado.  But we liked the players they had on their team in those days.
• Sideline commentators who ask a harried coach whose team is behind 20 points at the half what they need to do to win in the second half.  Say what?
• Commentators who cannot resist saying, when there are 23.1 seconds left, and one team is behind 15 points, "there is still plenty of time."  I'll say. 
• The Los Angeles Lakers.  Oh, right, I already listed them.  But they need listed again.  Go Rockets.  Actually, the Professor was not fond of the Rockets until he saw there is a chance that they can beat the Lakers.  At least the Rockets won one game.

A Barbershop Story to Warm Your Heart

Aaron Falk, writer for Salt Lake's Deseret News newspaper, writes a touching story about Lew the Barber, apparently soon to retire after 61 years of barbering, 51 of which were at the Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City.  And now his barbershop is being swept aside to make room for conference rooms.

One of his last haircuts was for an old man in a wheelchair.  Lew the Barber ignored the man's comments about money and told him "It's a free one today."   Go here to read the story to see who the old man was.

I finally figured out how to load photos in circle and oval mat openings and put a double mat around them.  Last I saw, a circular mat cutter attachment cost $70 or more and took the patience of Job to measure and make it fit the photo.  This mat took just a few clicks on the computer (plus hours of frustration figuring it out).
